Corrosion in the boiler, steam lines and condensate lines

Corrosion in the boiler, steam lines and condensate lines can be caused by dissolved gasses that are not removed before entering the boiler. They need to be liberated by heat. Boiler feedwater usually contains oxygen and carbon dioxide as dissolved gases. They can be removed with chemicals in most cases but when that is not practical, a deaerator should be installed.

Boiler maintenance is critical for safe and efficient operation. Basic boiler maintenance includes:

-Know the equipment. Have all manuals and necessary drawings.
-Maintain equipment records.
-Establish a routine boiler inspection schedule.
-Establish and use boiler room log sheets.
-Establish and maintain posted operating procedures.
-Maintain a clean boiler room.
-Maintain an adequate fresh air supply in the boiler room.
-Maintain accurate fuel records.
-Practice required lockout/tagout procedures when a boiler is off-line.
