DRAFT SYSTEMS | The two types of draft produced in a boiler are natural draft and mechanical draft. Natural draft is produced by the natural action resulting from temperature differences between air and gases of combustion. Mechanical draft provides greater control of the combustion process and is more common in our client’s buildings and factories. Mechanical draft is produced using a mechanical device such as a fan or blower. It may be forced, induced, or a mix of both.

* Forced draft pushes the air through the boiler with fans located in front of the boiler furnace.

* Induced draft pulls air through the boiler furnace with fans located in the breeching.

* Combination forced and induced draft (AKA “balanced draft”) is mechanical draft from fans located before and after the boiler.

Draft accessories such as fans, blowers, and dampers produce and regulate the flow of air and gases of combustion through the boiler furnace.
