Essays instead of blogs

I recently heard on the minimalist podcast that they don’t like to call their pieces of writing “blogs” but instead, they like to call them essays. they are very particular about this and I thought it was worth discussing. When I was discussing this with my action partner, he agreed and said that the term blog to him portrays something coming from a fat lady in her living room. LOL. I would have never thought of that, but i see where he is coming from. He went on to say that essays are easy to write. They have a simple introduction and conclusion that lay out what you are going to say, followed by repeating what you are going to say.

Blogs can be random, flowing all over the place and not really about any specific topic. The word blog may be over played too. The Mimalist write essays and then compile their essays into chapters or categories which then turn into a book. Maybe our experts would be more int he mood to write an exxay, over a blog. Clearly this would just be a different way of looking at the same thing.

The main fact, no matter if certain people in the company understand it or not, is that we must create a regular stream of content. These pieces of content are items of value and will lead clients to us and also offer me a chance to provide them with an item of value. When we provide items of value, we come across as the industry leaders and a thought leader in that area. They are not sellie or intrusive, but welcomed and appreciated.

As a marketing team, we have a goal for 2021 to put out a monthly newsletter to our nearly 7,000 email address. Traditionally we have written three blogs, laid them out with about a paragraph teaser, a cool photo and a link to our website where they can find the rest of the blog.

Purpose

Essay vs. Blog

The purpose of an essay is to inform. An essay writer gathers information about a particular subject, forms an analysis and a conclusion about it, and puts it together in a structured way so that they can share their knowledge and thoughts on the subject with others.

A blog is meant to entertain, although some of them can be informative. There are no rules or guidelines for how a blog should be structured. Blogs of all kinds, on all sorts of topics, and written in all kinds of different structures and tones can be found on the internet. Most blogs are informal, and many are very personal. Blogs can also be updated and edited at any time.

Audience

The audience for an essay is most often academic. A well-written and well-researched essay can be used as a legitimate and reliable source of information that analyzes one specific topic with a reasoned thesis statement and good supporting arguments.

The audience for a blog is online readers and may also include people looking for reliable information, but most often it includes people who want to be entertained and engaged while reading the writer’s personal thoughts on a topic. While plagiarism is always frowned upon, there are few rules for sourcing in a blog and some use no sourcing, or no reliable sources, for their information at all. While any good essay will make clear where the writer got their information, bloggers don’t always do this. It’s important to know how to be sure a blogger is using accurate information on which to base their opinion before assuming the information is true.
