Early on in recovery someone joked, “the only things you have to change in recovery are your people, places and things.” Wow! Really, your people place and things? I visualized it and shared in my podcast this morning. The out put from the CPU is only a product of the inputs going into it.

The areas of input in my life are these categories: Family time, Working, Spending, Friends, Sleeping, Food, Physical activity, Spirituality, Reading, Driving, Fun, Self Care, Service….tune into my podcast for more specific examples of these.

I had to pull out each and every wire and cable feeding input into my life. Take a look at the end of the wire.

Looking at the wire inputting my life was critical and necessary to change the software and program of my life. Photo credit (https://www.theverge.com/2016/5/18/11705038/cablevision-coax-destroyed-tv-nearly-killed-me)

Do you have bad cables? Some of the wires needed to be pulled out and not put back in. Some entire cables needed to be changed because they had a poor connection. Some were not working at all. There were a few that needed to be pulled out for a little while to assess if I was going to put them back in but at a lower percentage…like I still want this in my life, but only at 20% compared to what I was allowing.

There are certain people places and things in my life that needed evaluating and needed an entire new program. There are people who are not allowed to have input in my life anymore because they were toxic. That doesn’t that it will be like that forever, but “just for today” that has to be the program I run in order to maximize serenity and my time in the next 24 hours of sobriety.
