FYI.  More from Freight Farms.

Of course, I haven’t told John Nappier exactly what our interest is.  As you’ll see from this note, he’s interested in selling boxes to universities as a source of produce for their food services, not as a launching pad to a larger endeavor.

John,

Thanks for sending this.  I, too, enjoyed our conversation and I look forward to our faculty learning more about this type of indoor farming as we think about the convergence of innovation/technology, environmental security, food security and our cross-disciplinary academic objectives.  I will be back in touch to let you know of the details of the CAU team that wants to visit your site at Georgia State.

I look forward to staying in touch.

All best,

M.

Carlton/Jim

I had a conversation late yesterday with John Nappier at Freight Farms, based in Boston.  That company was brought to our attention by Stan Vangilder, the head of the Indoor Farming initiative at Southern Company and who wants to get involved with our project. After visiting Freight Farms headquarters, Stan reported that they have an operation in Atlanta that I later learned is at Georgia State University.

Given that my outreach to Podponics-based here in Atlanta and a logical place for our team to actually see a precedent to a vertical farming model– has gone unanswered, I reached out to FF to see if we can arrange a time for our team to visit their operation.   As you’ll see from his email below, he is inviting us to attend an Open House that FF  will be having at Georgia State on October 24th.

We’d talked about a meeting during the latter part of September to talk through our next steps.  However, I believe that the conversation will be much more productive if our faculty have had a chance to actually see an indoor farm, understand the technologies and science involved and, thereby, gain a better sense of what they will need to do, how to engage students and whether/how to adjust selected courses or independent studies to accommodate this effort.  This upcoming event seems to give us a chance to do that.  That said, I will certainly ask if we can come over earlier.

The final issue, of course, is that this date comes only 2 days before our fall meeting of the Board of Trustees! (We are planning to discuss the VF initiative with the Board during that meeting).  Because the FF model is just across town, a visit won’t be so time-consuming.  But it might be a bit tricky to carve out the time we’d need for a comprehensive discussion with you that week with the Board demands upon us.

Any thoughts as to how we might schedule our next conversation?  I would  like to give Stan Vangilder a heads up too.

Many thanks,

M.

Hello Marilynn,

It was a pleasure speaking with you yesterday.

Over the summer a new project sprouted on the Georgia State campus, and we’re excited to tell you all about it. Georgia State’s Panther Dining is committed to keeping sustainable practices at the forefront of our dining operations, which is why for the past few months we’ve been working closely with the Freight Farms team to begin growing our own fresh produce right on campus!

Now that the fall semester is in full swing, we’d like to extend an invitation to you and your team to come visit our farm and learn about how we’re integrating this new technology into dining operations. We’ll be hosting an Open House in partnership with Freight Farms on Tuesday October 18th at noon in hopes that we can show that sustainable agriculture is possible and feasible on every campus.

The visit will start off with a farm tour led by our own Staff Farmers, Betsy Rivera and Cameron Thompson, and will be followed by lunch with a special presentation by Freight Farms. To register and for more information, please use this link<https://www.eventbrite.com/e/freight-farms-open-house-at-georgia-state-university-tickets-27353181101>. Don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions!
