Starting a Life Operating Model

Starting a Life Operating Model

9/13/21 Today, I listened to a podcast by Lewis Howes titled “How To Use The Law of Attraction to Become Successful” with Rob Dyrdek EP1159.

He pretty much said my story of why do I do a podcast? He said (and I firmly agree) “I need a platform for people to hear the way I speak and think about business to attract and bring entrepreneurs who want to build and grow businesses with me. That is my primary focus with my podcast.”

Everyday, he said that he tracks on a scale from 1-10, how does he feel that day and why. He asks himself that question in three different categories: Life, Work and Health.

He created a Life Operating Model titled his “Rhythm of Existence” and it was 80+ pages. He said that he had categories for each area of his life and exactly how things operate. I equate this to how when I worked at the large-scale vegetable operation, we had SOPs and SSOPs for everything. Those are Standard Operating Procedures and Standard Sanitation Operating Procedures. This left nothing to question. New employees were just handed the playbook and could flip through and see how to do any task. Everything from how to take a water sample properly out of the pond to how to clean and sanitize the harvesting crates at the end of the day.

Rob said that his Rhythm of Existence had categories for travel, haircuts, family agendas, date nights, what to do if there is a leak…as in which plumbers to call, meeting agenda templates, schedules….everything.

He said he is trying to create and design a pure balanced life. For him, he learned that that means 30% work, 30% sleep, and 10% health. His use of time tracking over a time span of a year, allowed him to capture totals. He can tell if he needs to cut back on a certain area or if his life is in balance. I love this idea and have been thinking about how to utilize this data. I have about 2 years of excel spreadsheets and can use that to create a dashboard or even a pie chart or something fun.

His master 80-page document had listed out what the KPI’s (Key Performance Indicators) are for each of the division heads of his company. The 10 categories are: Venture, Media, Product, Community, Philanthropy, Founder Brand Management, Operations, Brand, Marketing, Finance. He also has a Chief of Staff and a President of his company. I know I am not there yet, but these categories can apply to my job currently. I could work on these individually with my job now and then build them on the side with the Path to Warren…whatever Mt. Everest that will become one day.

He said the Chief of Staff was the most difficult to fill. With all of these division heads, they have goals and those KPIs ladder up to The (Warren) Machine. His machine is what he has created to take a startup to massive growth and then to sell that brand or business. It is the ultimate entrepreneurial machine.

I loved his idea of having a hot sheet for each division. So, on Monday, he has each division head submit to him what that division’s hot sheet is for the upcoming week. All of those individual hot sheets feed into this Master Hot Sheet which has both personal and business – all 10 divisions and managers go through it.

Rob spends 1 hour Monday morning going through the Master Hot Sheet with his Chief of Staff, discussing everything on it, both personal and business. Then after that meeting, he will spend 30 mins with each of the 10 division heads to discuss their specific division’s hot sheets each Monday. That way, he said by the end of Monday, the entire company is on the same page each week.

SOME QUESTIONS I ASK:

  • If you could only do 5 things each day to set yourself up for success and abundance what would they be?
  • What should we be obsessed with?
  • How do you keep a clean diet?
  • What are the 3 best investments in business or life?
  • What will you have created in 5 years?
